As we dive deeply into the heat of summer, I have been thinking a lot about the role we play in building community. As I have been reflecting on my own roles that I play in life, I have begun to delight in the wise advice that I am receiving.
Whether it be from friends, clients, or advisors, one thing that has become clear is how deeply we are craving truthful communication. Intelligent, rational, objective leadership is truly at the heart of the matter.
As we enter a new reality as a Nation, we will be faced with choices that on their face may seem insurmountable. This is an opportunity to take a deep breath and center ourselves on the truths we hold in our souls. It is an opportunity to ask ourselves two deeply probing questions:
How do I relate to others?
Am I suspicious or engaging?
These questions allow us to excavate the assumptions we make about others, while we shed light on the places where we may be acting out of a space of emotional immaturity or inaccurate information.
Today, I invite you to consider how you may be reacting from a space of fear. When we resist the unknown, and try to control outcomes, we get thrown into a space of fight or flight that overstimulates us like we have had too much coffee. Our words become jitters, our thoughts start to race…we thrust ourselves into overdrive.
We have been at a crossroads for some time now. There are choices that we are making that could further isolate us from our communities and the needs of our brethren.
There is a way that we can shift course.
We could choose to see ourselves in our shared humanity.
We could choose to ask different questions of the people we are surrounded with.
We could choose to set assumptions aside in the quest for clarity.
The invitation for all of us is to become more adaptable and flexible. As children of the earth, when we take our cues from the adaptability of nature to continue on, we resist less and flow more.
We start to notice when we are overwhelmed or stressed out. The simple act of noticing allows us to nurture ourselves and get to know ourselves better. This self reflection could be a game changer for all of us.
Imagine if we focused on the thousands of tiny possibilities that are waiting for us.
I won’t lie, the last 7 months have been very difficult for our family. Sometimes the only thing that has gotten me through is remembering to remain curious about what could happen next.
A few days ago, as he was giving his sermon in church, our priest Father David said these words, “Live as though your very being is of benefit to everyone.” This little sentence carried great meaning for me. When I get bogged down in the what if’s and the shitty should’s, I find it difficult to focus on my purpose here on earth.
Remembering that I am woven together in the very fabric of humanity allows me to sit at the crossroads as if I am laying on a bed of grass beside a burbling stream. The answer presents itself almost immediately.
To navigate the unknown, to navigate the transformations happening throughout our Nation, to honor our souls and our shared humanity, we must care for others. When we remain grounded in the wisdom of mothering, as the earth teaches us, we connect with each other in the fertile abundance of the divine.
May we all live as if our very being is of benefit to everyone.
By the way…

We need better leadership in this world all around. We need to lead ourselves better as a species, too. That's for sure. I love the fabric of humanity imagery. <3 We are woven together!
